Alpha Gamma Alpha has grown to establish a name for itself not only in the UCLA and Armenian communities, but the greater community as well. Alpha Gamma Alpha is dedicated to bettering their community through community outreach and services.
The girls continue to dedicate their time and energy to certain charities and programs each year such as: Secret Santa, where they deliver Christmas presents to under-privileged, inner city schools, or Dance Marathon here at UCLA where girls participate and raise money for pediatric aids.
Causes ranging from genocide to autism awareness kept the girls busy this year. They volunteered with AAOP, Armenian Autism Outreach Program, helping out with activities such as finger-painting at the cure autism now walk and making bracelets to sell for the cause.
In April, they co-sponsored several genocide commemoration events with ASA including the "Stop the Genocide of Truth" commemoration concert.The show included performances from Visa, Full Force Rising, and other up and coming bands and proceeds went to the Anahid fund, one of the sorority’s charities, which provides pre-natal and infant care for women in Armenia. Earlier in the year the girls volunteered for the children’s music fund charity, set up by Dr. Raffi Tachdjian, which invest in Musical Therapy as an alternative method for curing chronic illness.
Community Service Chair Angela Mujukian hopes to start a year-long project with the Mattel children’s hospital, volunteering under Dr. Raffi’s supervision to distribute instruments to pediatric patients.
Alpha Gamma Alpha frequents Dockweiler Beach for rush events and Social chair Mari Gezalyan found a way for the girls to adopt it so they could keep it clean. Academics Chair Georgina Bekerian oversees the girls’ mandatory study hours each quarter.
They have implemented a new GPA requirement higher than that set by the MIGC council. They have won MIGC awards for sorority with highest GPA and Best Chapter Program. Education is a top priority for the sisters of Alpha Gamma Alpha and they donate textbooks and AP prep books to high schools.
Future plans include a trip to Armenia where they will be reaching out to women through AIDS awareness, as there is an increased risk of contracting sexual transmitted diseases and HIV.
The importance of community service and education has helped shaped many young and successful sisters. Alumni include young, successful women in a variety of fields including law, medicine, and business.
The sorority will be hosting an Alumni Networking forum, the first of its kind, where alumni from all five chapters will come to speak to current sisters.
Alpha Gama Alpha is a great way to make life-long friends, and new sisters. It’s a way to find yourself and grow. It’s a way to have fun, help out the community, and create opportunities for yourself.
